  • Nevada’s unemployment rate stands, as of May 1 2009, at a whopping 11.3 percent. This is nearly two full percentage points above the national average which sits at about 9.4 percent.
While that does tend to look bleak, there are several states who’s unemployment rates are above those of Nevada.

Typically Nevada has been largely dependent upon tourism for its monetary and financial health and that of the Nevada residents. We are finding that Nevada’s tourism, while still relatively healthy, has declined somewhat in response to the employment conditions, or unemployment conditions of the other states. This means that with fewer leisure dollars to spend and fewer dollars to spend on luxuries such as gambling and entertainment, Nevada workers are feeling the pinch.

All of those gloom and doom factors aside, there are jobs to be had in Nevada. The job services, the employment papers and job seeker sites are literally filled with them. YOu’re going to find however that most of them are not in the field of entertainment or tourism in recent months.
Nevada up and coming jobs, those which are in higher demand and look to stay in higher demand are largely casino or entertainment industry jobs, true enough, but they are higher tech jobs.

Networking workers seem to be at a premium, with multiple casinos’ seeking out technical and technicians for their own network support. Systems administration positions, again, in the gambling and other entertainment industries are appearing rapidly, as the casinos and entertainment in such larger areas as Las Vegas move toward newer technologies and fuller featured web sites and internal networking.

Medical careers also are on the rise in Nevada. Nursing particularly, but the nuclear medicine arenas are being widely advertised, with vast amounts of openings being offered at good salary and benefits levels.

In addition to the previously mentioned career opportunities in Nevada, a further career, despite the downturn in our economy seems to be the construction industry with multiple positions opening up from labor to heavy highway equipment operations. This is in part due to the continuing building and renovation of the larger cities, but is also in part due to construction taking place in other areas such as the Hoover Dam area, and nearby Arizona communities such as Kingman.

No, the economic outlook for Nevada at the moment is not completely bright, but there are indeed bright spots on that horizon. Given the nature of Nevada, and its long history of survival and coming out on top, you can certainly assume that the economy will begin to pick up. In the meantime, there are jobs out there, and they are plentiful. It merely requirese knowing where to look.
